Eeep, it’s that time of year again! I absolutely love the lead up to Christmas and most importantly all of the parties that come with it. I have a few get togethers planned with friends and work colleagues over the festive season, the first being our work Christmas party taking place in Cardiff tomorrow night. It’s sure to be a messy affair, and I’m so excited to let loose after a crazy work schedule. I’ve got a new glittery dress and some strappy heels for the occasion, and a whole host of beauty products to go with it. Here are my makeup must-haves for the party season…
1. A flawless base
Anyone else end up going out for spontaneous after-work drinks in the lead up to the big day? Whether it’s a post-office tipple or a fully fledged night on the tiles, a foundation that’s going to stay put and leave your skin looking flawless from dusk till dawn is an absolute essential. There’s one foundation that always does this for me, and that’s Dior’s Diorksin Forever. It’s heavy enough to give a full coverage, without leaving your face looking caked in product, and it has a really fantastic staying power which is ideal for me as I have such an oily base. I apply using my beauty blender, adding extra layers to areas that need it (I have a few pesky pimples that keep reappearing). You can read my full review on Dior Forever here.
Its also really important to set your base with a fine powder, so after contouring and highlighting my face for a big night out (yep, I’m still living in 2016) I always use Clinique’s Superpowder Double Face Powder to finish. I absolutely adore this product. I actually bought it to replace a product from Bare Minerals that had been discontinued and now it’s something I use daily. It’s heavy enough to be worn without a liquid foundation underneath, but I like to wear it on top as it really sets my makeup and keeps oil and shine at bay. I always take this out with me so I can top up on any toilet breaks if I’m heading out with the girls.
I also consider my fake tan to be the very beginning of my Christmas party preparations, and I usually tend to tan two days before an event so I can go over any streaks and add a little more colour to the first layer the night before a party. I absolutely love Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam for this. It leaves a really natural shade, lasts well over a week and is pretty much streak free. I wouldn’t use any other tan after discovering it. I may not have seen sunshine for months but I still gotta rock that golden glow. Who’s with me?!
2. A smoky eye palette
I love rocking a smoky eye for any occasion, even if I’m just popping into town to do some shopping for the day, but a Christmas party is the perfect excuse to really vamp up your look. The darker the better! For this I can’t recommend Urban Decay’s Naked Smoky Eyeshadow Palette enough. It seems to only be part of the Naked Vault now, but any of Urban Decay’s Naked Palettes will do the trick as the product is really buildable and can be blended together to create that perfect finish. I love how the shadows have an almost creamy consistency, meaning they apply to the eyelid with barely any fall out, and they have such amazing staying power too.
3. Some serious sparkle
Yaaay, my favourite part of a Christmas party look! I was rocking glitter and shimmery highlights all through the summer as part of the festival season, and I sure as hell aren’t going to say goodbye to all that glittery goodness until next year. MAC’s Mineralise Skinfinish Highlighter is the perfect way to add a little glam to your makeup look. I apply with a brush onto the cheekbones, under the eyebrows and on the tip of the nose and my cubid’s bow. As far as I’m concerned, if you can’t see your highlighter from space then you need to add more.
And why not take it one step further by adding some glitter gel liner to your eyes? I love the Collection Glam Crystals Gel Eyeliners from Superdrug. I used to wear them to school all the time when I was in year 8, and was always sent to the bathrooms to remove it by whichever teacher spotted it that day, but I’ve recently repurchased this and think its perfect for the party season. Plus, it’s only £2.99 so an absolute bargain buy!
4. A bold lip
We’ve got the dark eyes, a shit load of glitter, and a flawless base, so why not add a bold lip into the mix? I mean, there’s no time like Christmas to rock every single “out there” makeup look at once. I’m still loving a liquid matte lip, mainly because of the staying power they have and how well they last on a night out, so I can’t recommend Kat Von D’s Liquid Lipsticks enough. There’s a range of shades to suit everyone, and the quality is fantastic. This particular one is in the shade __ and it’s really bold and deep – not to everyone’s taste but I love it.
5. A longlasting fragrance
And for the final touch, a spritz of your favourite perfume is key. I’m still loving Michael Kors’ Wonderlust. It’s got a really fabulous citrusy scent, and amazing staying power so no matter how many shapes you bust on the dance floor you still smell fabulous.
What are your makeup must-haves for a Christmas shindig?
Lots of love. xoxo
