Lifestyle | Six steps to happiness.

In case you’ve missed the copious amount of holiday-related tweets popping up on my timeline (@jessieann48) or are yet to read Sunday’s post about my duty free beauty wishlist, then you’ll know today I’m hopping on a plane to Greece for a week of complete relaxation in the gorgeous Aegean sunshine. Now I don’t know about you, but nothing quite says happiness like a week spent by the pool, soaking in the sun’s rays and sipping on strawberry daiquiris.

I’ve been thinking a lot about happiness and what makes me happy lately, particularly as up until a week ago the last three months were mostly spent doing nothing apart from staring at a computer screen and working on my thesis. I didn’t see my friends for weeks. I barely left the house apart from going to the gym or walking my dogs, and in all honesty it was quite a crappy and pretty stressful time. Hopefully it’s all been worth it though, and the feeling I had when I handed it in last week was pretty awesome (read here). So for today’s post I thought I’d discuss the “Six Steps to Happiness”. If you’re going through a particularly stressful or demanding time, I hope these tips lift your spirits!

1. Get rid of negativity

Is your job getting you down? Are you surrounding yourself with people who make you feel nothing but useless? Make a change and say goodbye to things that make you feel nothing but negative, as life really is too short to waste your precious time and energy on anything that doesn’t make you happy. Of course, this is easier said than done, but even taking tiny baby steps to getting rid of negativity can make you feel so much more positive.

2. Spend time away from technology

My life revolves around technology. I’m always working on projects on my laptop, reading blogs, or tweeting and stalking blogger babes on my Insta-feed, so I’ve made a conscious effort over the past two weeks to ditch my phone and laptop at least half an hour before bed and to read or write instead. I settle to sleep so quickly after spending some time unwinding, and I wake up feeling so much more refreshed. I also tend to read my social media feeds as if they’re the morning newspaper, so I’m trying to avoid doing that too, though that’s more of a difficult habit to break!

3. Be creative

Yes, yes, yes! I’m all about creativity and whether it’s painting, writing, photographing or simply brain storming blog ideas, I love nothing more than getting those creative juices flowing and seeing what I come up with. We’re all sucked into the monotony of life at times – getting up, going to work, working out, eating and sleeping – so escaping reality through art, music, writing or reading is the perfect way to happiness.

4. Get outside

As a girl born and bred in rural Wales I love nothing more than embracing the countryside and all its beauty. For me, living so close to the sea is an absolute dream and I’m so grateful to have the coast on my doorstep. Watching the sun setting and creating a rainbow effect over the waves, or sitting snuggled in the car as a stormy sea crashes against the shore – I just love how calming it is. After being cooped up inside all day, there really is nothing better.

5. Socialise

I absolutely love my own company. I love nothing more than sitting down with my laptop, reading blog posts and binge watching reality tv after a busy day, but a little “girl time” is so needed at times. I always find offloading some of my stresses onto my girlfriends, and listening to their stresses in return, can be so therapeutic and I definitely feel relieved after hearing other people’s perspectives and having a good old chat. When your life is spent slaving away at a desk every day, and communicating only via email or social media, it’s always good to interact IRL with friends, and any excuse for an after-work tipple, eh?

6. Take time to yourself

On the other hand, running yourself into the ground by attending every event, occasion and meeting that’s jotted down in your diary can cause you to go a little crazy. Saying no and taking time to relax and rejuvenate is so important. Go work out, run a hot bath with a mountain of bubbles, start that new Netflix episode, indulge in a full body scrub. Just do something that makes you feel good.. Oh, and get an early night too! Nothing like some beauty sleep to make you feel a million times better.

What makes you happy?

Lots of love,

Jessie. xoxo

What a beautiful post with such gorgeous photography! I recently have worked on cutting the negative aspects out of my life like an unfulfilling job or certain people that no longer help me grow- and it has made such an amazing difference! Being creative can also be so inspiring so that's something I whole heartedly agree with as well. Thank you for such a lovely post!My Lovelier Days

Good points! I totally agree that eliminating any negative people or things can make you feel happier. Life is definitely too short! Posts like this are great for getting things in perspective as it's all too easy to get caught up in something and not really realise it! xx ♥ Carly Susanne ~ A Beauty & Lifestyle Blog

This is a great post. It's difficult to find a good balance between everything and still be happy. I definitely need to learn from you here and spend some time away from a screen before I go to bed and when I wake up, it's such a hard habit to break.
