I don’t know about you, but I love food. I love eating out and would rather go out for a nice meal than to go out clubbing on a weekend. (I mean, why would you drink all those calories when you can just eat them instead and wake up feeling fresh?) So when I was asked to try out Burger and Lobster‘s new menu in their Cardiff branch last month I jumped at the chance! I’d never actually tried Burger and Lobster before, mainly because I’m quite a fussy eater and wasn’t sure I’d like either the burger or the lobster; but I’d always heard good things and had always seen Instagram-worthy photos so was really excited to give it a try.
Nothing beats a strawberry daiquiri after a long day!
The first thing I noticed about the Cardiff branch, which is situated on The Hayes just outside of the St. David’s 2 shopping centre, was how large the space was. There were lots of tables placed spaciously around the room and huge big windows gave some natural light to what would otherwise be a rather dark place. Gorgeous stone pillars wound their way to the ceiling and a huge bar where baristas were flipping bottles and mixing cocktails stood proudly in the centre. Lots of people were there for after-work drinks and for meals with friends, and it really felt like a über classy place to catch up with friends.
I took my mum and my brother along with me to try out the menu, both of whom had never been to Burger and Lobster before, and we were shown to a table at the far end of the room and were told how the event would work. We could choose anything off the menu, but were asked to all try something a little different to get the full experience.
Lobster rolls are a new addition to Cardiff’s B&L menu.
The new menu itself is based on customer feedback as many B&L lovers had asked for a little more variety. The whole concept of eating out at B&L is very simple, and it’s a strategy that has worked really well in Cardiff. However, as customers wanted something new to tickle their tastebuds, the new menu introduced new burgers, including a Welsh lamb burger, some yummy new side dishes, and a new variety lobster rolls (essentially like a burger but with lobster meat!). It even has a children’s burger and fries meal for younger eaters.
I opted for the beef burger with fries (being the plain Jane I am), my mum chose the New England lobster roll, and my brother chose the classic lobster. We all went for fries, as it was a cheat night after all, and decided to try a side of nachos with beef brisket and cheese.
Absolute food porn.
The food didn’t take long to arrive at all – possibly as we were too busy enjoying our strawberry daiquiris – and when it arrived it looked absolutely mouthwatering although the size of the food itself didn’t look too overpowering. The fries came in cute little tins (a touch which I loved) and we immediately all dug in.
I have to say that the food overall was cooked to perfection. The burger was succulent and extremely tasty, the lobster really easy to eat, and the sides and fries were really delicious. I gave my brother a little chunk of my burger to try and he said it was “one of the best” he’d ever tasted and we were all in agreement that the food was really yummy. The portion size was also quite deceiving as, despite it not looking like a huge plateful of food, there was loads to eat and it took us a long while to actually get through it all! I really do have to give a special shoutout to the nachos with beef brisket side though, as that was delicious and probably my favourite part of the whole meal.
Lobster and fries was my brother’s choice for the evening.
After finishing our mains a lovely waitress asked if we had room to squeeze in some dessert which, of course, we did so we all chose a chocolate caramel brownie with ice cream for our pud. All I can say is wow! There really is nothing nicer than a piping hot chocolate brownie, that’s crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, drizzled with sauce and teamed with some lovely creamy ice cream. Honestly, I’d probably go back to B&L again if just for the dessert, as it was absolutely perfect and the ideal way to round off a cheat meal.
There’s always room for dessert!
So, the overall verdict? I’d go back to B&L again, although both my mum and brother said they would opt for the burger rather than the lobster next time. This is basically on a matter of taste as both of them aren’t huge fish eaters, but chose those options out of curiosity and because we were each asked to try something a little different. It’s a restaurant that’s ideal for those who do enjoy burgers and lobster but, despite the choices of meals expanding in the new menu, it is still quite limited and honestly if you’re not a fan of either foods you’ll struggle to find anything on the menu that you can enjoy (apart from the sides or desserts!). They also don’t have a veggie option which is a shame. That being said, the simplicity is the beauty of Burger & Lobster. A simple, yet extremely tasty menu, that’s sure to leave you with a happy food baby. Plus, it’s a seriously great place to hang out and drink cocktails with friends too!
