I think it’s safe to say that Autumn is officially here, and I’m so excited. I absolutely love this time of year – cosy clothes, walks in the crisp, Autumn air, the nights drawing in and exciting events like Hallowe’en and Guy Fawkes. It’s all happening in the next few months and what’s more, we get to vamp up our wardrobes and makeup bags in the process.
While I often wear dark makeup on the eyes throughout the year, I usually mix up my lipstick shades, opting for bright, sometimes luminous, shades in the summer and deep, dark shades in autumn and winter. This year is no exception, and for today’s post I thought I would share some of my favourite A/W lipstick shades.
For me, Autumn is all about bright reds, deep plums, browns and beiges, and natural nudes. I have a select few favourites, shown in the picture above, and these range from the very high end to the drugstore beauties that cost less than £5. You can really see how well loved these lipsticks are, as a few are looking a little worse for wear and are really worn down to the brim, but I literally don’t stop wearing these shades in A/W.
Revlon Super Lustrous “Revlon Red” | R.R.P – £4.99 – a classic red is a must-have for any season, and “Revlon Red” is perfect. It’s bright and glamorous and glides on like a dream for a long-lasting finish. This is a shade I love for evening dos and functions, and I particularly love it in the lead up to Christmas and the party season, of course. It is very bold so if you’re new to wearing bright shades then it may be a little too vibrant, but I really love it. It’s at a really fab price for such great quality too!
MAC “Brave Red” | R.R.P – £15.50 – similar to “Revlon Red” but with a deeper pigmentation and a slightly purple-ish tone, this is a deep red which I adore for A/W. It has a thicker, more matte feel when applied and this ensures it doesn’t budge for hours. I love the consistency of MAC lipsticks, and this was the first one I bought. It was definitely worth it and I wear it for all occasions in the autumn, whether it’s day or night time.
Topshop “Suspected” | R.R.P – £8.00 – in my opinion, Topshop have some of the nicest lipstick shades and are of a really fabulous quality. They glide on quickly and evenly, before setting perfectly with a matte finish and that’s what I love about them. This particular shade is a deep plum and is one of the darkest lipsticks I own, but I love the berry finish and, again, it’s a really versatile colour which can take an outfit from day to night.
Beauty UK “Plumalicious” | R.R.P – £3.49 – the cheapest of today’s picks, but one of my absolute favourites! It really is “plumalicous”, with a pink hue when applied to the lips. It’s got a really lustrous finish too, and is surprisingly really long lasting in spite of this. I like how this shade is build able so you can go deeper and darker with saturation if need be, and what I love is that is costs under £4. It does have the tendency to bleed a little around the lips, so I would recommend wearing a lip liner, but for that price you can’t complain!
Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “Shame”| R.R.P – £15.50 – this is a favourite of mine that is going to be worn on such a regular basis throughout the next few months. I just love it! It’s a really dark red which has a gorgeous pigmented finish, making it on of the boldest lipsticks I own. But what’s a dark red lipstick if it’s not bold, eh? This glides on like a dream and is really long lasting. I wore it for my graduation and it didn’t budge all day, despite drinking lots of champers. This makes it great for a night out. Again, this one needs a lip liner to keep it in place but the longevity and gorgeous colour makes up for this.
Topshop “Sashay Away” | R.R.P – £8.00 – an absolute favourite. I bought this last Christmas and you can see that it’s been used and abused the past few months. It’s really dark and really gorgeous, with a glossy, sheen to give a really glamorous finish. I love teaming this with dark smoky eyes and a strong contour for an evening do, or to add a little something to a natural daytime look.
Topshop “Mink” | R.R.P – £8.00 – another favourite of mine is Topshop’s “Mink”. It’s a lovely nude shade which adds a little pigmentation to your natural lips and once applied it really does not budge. Although neutral shades are huge in Spring/Summer, I love them in Autumn/Winter too, especially in the day time. This one is really soft and nourishing on the lips and it looks like I’ll soon be all out. I just love it! Unfortunately this one has been discontinued, but if anyone finds a shade and consistency similar please let me know.
YSL Rouge Volupte “Ultimate Beige” | £26.00 – the newest addition to my lipstick collection, and my most luxurious. The packaging of this lipstick is absolutely stunning – I mean just look at it – and it really lives up to it’s rather extortionate price tag with it’s lustrous finish and gorgeous colour. This is one that I’ve been wearing almost daily since I bought it as it works so well with so many different makeup looks. I’ll be honest though, while I would love to add more to my collection, it’s a little too expensive on a student budget.
What are your favourite colours for Autumn/Winter?
Lots of love,
