For me one of the main things that I found (and still do find) hard about being at university is being away from home. My first two years I was so homesick. All I wanted to do was catch a train back to Carmarthen where I would have my lovely, clean house, my mum cooking me delicious meals and my friends, family and boyfriend surrounding me. This year, however, I was determined to enjoy life away from home more and have found that keeping busy has helped a lot. I haven’t been homesick once (although I am seriously missing my power shower and dish washer) and am so proud of myself for staying for nearly three weeks whereas before I didn’t stay more than about six days,
Here are a few things I have done these past two weeks to keep myself busy and to embrace university life, and if you’re a homebird like me and feel a bit lost with what to do in your free time then I would definitely suggest these!
For two years I have lived in Cardiff and have been a ten minute walk away from a beautiful park filled with gardens, a huge lake and lots of beautiful countryside. I live in rural Wales so always miss the countryside when I’m in the city. Get out and explore your surroundings! You will be surprised at the things you find and the hidden gems you see!
2. Have a night in
This year I have transferred to the Cardiff Miss Selfridge store so have had no choice but to stay in Cardiff on weekends where I could usually go home. To keep myself busy in the nights I have been spending times with friends and enjoying lovely evening meals in front of the television. Cooking with friends is a great way to save money and it’s also a nice way to catch up!
3. Work out
For me a great way to keep busy is to work out. I love going to the gym to blow off steam and to get pumped! It also helps me to stay in shape when I’m tempted by nights out and takeaways! (Although I have actually been super healthy and have only eaten a pizza once!!) Join some gym classes, a sports team or if you’re not a fan of the gym go for a run or power walk. You will feel so much better for it!
4. Embrace university
Obviously the main reason you’re in university is to get a degree. I’m slightly overwhelmed by the amount of work I’ll have to do this year so have been kept really busy by doing my readings and writing up lecture notes before the dreaded assignments begin. I have also been writing for the university magazine and keeping up with my blog which always keeps you busy! Get involved with everything that the university has to offer and study hard!
One of the best things about university is the social life! I absolutely love going out and it’s a great way to meet new people, get dressed up and have some fun! Socialising and having a great group of friends will help you to feel a little more at home in your new home.
How do you keep busy at university?
Lots of love,
