I was very excited to be contacted by Jenny on behalf of Viviscal a few weeks ago with an idea for a blog post that I certainly am interested in. Viviscal is a company that specialises in hair growth supplements, and as someone who is desperate for beautiful long hair I was thrilled to be contacted by Jenny with some of her top tips for growing your hair and keeping it in fabulous condition.
Having good hair makes you look and feel great.Your hair can make a powerful statement about yourself. With 150,000 strands on our lovely heads, we are able to express our style and personality at first glance! Although, some of the things we put our hair through can have a really damaging and irreversible effect on its health. (I can definitely relate to this as someone who loves to use straightening irons and curling tongs to create pretty styles!) So, to help overcome this, we’ve devised a few tips to help make sure that every day is a great hair day!
Split ends can come in three forms, the standard split, the multiple split and the type that has a split further up the shaft causing a hole. All of these are irreversible unfortunately so the best way to deal with split ends is to say good bye to them altogether and get a good trim. Your hairdresser will be able to give a good recommendation of the amount that needs to be taken off the ends. This will give you a fresh pallet to begin your growth of beautiful hair!
As mad as it sounds cutting your hair will cause it to grow more. Getting rid of those straggly ends are essential and regular trims are great for keeping a clean upkeep, even if you want hair as long as Rapunzel – having a trim every now and then will ensure your long locks don’t have a rat tail in sight!
This is something I have experience with, as I thought it would look extremely cool when I was in year 9 to have bleach blonde hair! My hair is naturally so dark and the upkeep of stopping them from showing caused me to have to cut inches off my hair.
Scorching your hair with bleach is seriously going to affect its thickness and texture. Therefore, if you are deciding to go from dark to light, do it in stages so that you aren’t throwing a load of bleach onto your hair. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Marina and the Diamonds will be the first to tell you that making this mistake has left them needing emergency wigs!Once again, the best thing to do is to ask your hairdresser for a shade that you love and will be kind to your hair.
As easy as heat tools make our lives – I couldn’t live without my GHDs – they are beautifully disguised weapons of damage. Take the hair dryer; heated blow drying evaporates the moisture inside your hair that helps keep it looking nourished. Without this, the hair can be easily damaged and will expose the inner part of your hair, known as the cortex. Once this is exposed – it will resort to soaking up moisture in the air and become frizzy… not a look we wanted!
From this, what many of us do when our hair is frizzy is reach for the straighteners or tongs, another no-no! We understand that it may not be as simple as ‘bin your straighteners’ for some people, so instead, try turning the temperature down to the lowest heat setting or use them only when it’s really necessary. It will give your hair a bit of a break and you’ll soon notice that your air feels fuller!
Another trick of the trade is to wash your hair the night before, wrap it up in a bun and let it dry naturally. It’ll let your hair keep all of its natural oils and you’ll wake up with a barnet that has bounce! This is something that will only improve over time so be patient and you’ll soon feel the difference.
Did you know that stress is the number one cause of hair loss for women? This is because it causes your hair to enter its third stage of development early meaning that it is ready to shed. Whilst we can magically diffuse the stress points in your life, here are a few tips to help stop you tearing your hair out (literally!);
Go for a run – it’s amazing how much good a bit of fresh air in your lungs can do. Not only will it get the blood pumping round your body and allow you to take a fresh look on things once you’ve had some happy endorphins following around your body.
Take ‘you time’ to relax and unwind – having some you time to yourself can work wonders, so take some away from the world and have an evening to yourself. Baths are a perfect way to restore calm and relaxation to your muscles after a long day!
Spend time with friends – spending some time having fun and forgetting about life’s worries is essential. It doesn’t matter how much work you have on, you need to take a break and have a good time with loved ones. Not only will this make you feel 100 times better, but it will more than likely improve your work and communication skills (and lets face it, who doesn’t love a good socialise!?).
Not only are these tips good for your hair but they are good for your body, mind and soul too!
Sticking to a healthy diet will soon reflect in your hair, nails, eyes and skin. Your body is a machine craving for nutrients and you hair is one of the last places that the nutrients reaches so anything you can do to help them ensure they get their healthy feed will really help! Not only that, but it will help you reach your dream bod too!
Lean meat – as one of the best sources of protein available, lean meant will give your hair some serious strength and protection!
Eggs – these are wondrous little shells of hair goodness. Eggs contain biotin (which you’ll often find on the back of your shampoo bottle!) which is what gives your hair a shiny, healthy glow.
Oily fish – these are full of the acids needed to give your hair a boost. Salmon, mackerel, oysters and the likes are all perfect for hair growth; they also contain protein and vitamin D to grow stronger hair that is less likely to break.
Nuts and seeds – these help to protect the follicles at the root of the hair meaning that your hair has the best head start to grow lusciously long.
Fruit and veg – these are some serious hair heroes! Broccoli, spinach, bananas, kiwi’s and all kinds of other a healthy fruit and veg are packed full of minerals to give your hair a great bounce and fill you up with the minerals needed to get you through the day!
Even taking some of these smaller steps will help to improve your hairs condition leaving you full of hair confidence. If you would like to find out more advice about hair growth and hair problems visit Viviscal’s website for more information on the hair growth cycle.
Lots of love, Jessie. xoxo
